On October 15-17, 2024, we returned to the city that launched Reimagining the Civic Commons nearly a decade ago for Civic Commons Studio #9. The gathering in Philadelphia focused on how we are reimagining civic spaces to benefit communities, amidst rising loneliness, distrust, harmful climate impacts and economic segregation. Through cross-city exchange, participants from 10 U.S. cities delved into emerging practices, insights and challenges from their own work. Together, they discussed how public space can answer the call to action for more resilient, democratic and connected communities.
Shared civic spaces such as parks, trails, libraries and community centers have the potential to respond to many challenges we face in communities across the country. They can create places for people to gather and socialize, combatting America’s loneliness epidemic. They can offer regular opportunities to engage in diverse public life—connecting across differences, while fostering belonging. They can mitigate climate impacts and support community development for more equitable local economies. With human connection critical for a strong democracy, high-quality civic space has never been more necessary—not only for flourishing communities, but also for a flourishing nation.
The resilient, connected and prosperous American communities of the future will be the places that recognize: there is no civic life without civic space.
This was the focus of Civic Commons Studio #9. With the Civic Commons efforts in Philadelphia as a backdrop, participants experienced the work on the ground and shared learning across cities through city presentations, walking workshops, immersive learning, provocations from civic leaders and panel conversations.
