Civic Commons Learning Journey: Tulsa

Our visit to Tulsa, Oklahoma for a Civic Commons Learning Journey was an immersive dive into the variety of approaches community leaders are taking to nurture the public realm and revitalize neighborhoods while honoring cultures and historical legacies.

Our visit took us from the world-class design and stewardship of Gathering Place to the economic restoration efforts in the Historic Greenwood District, to cultural landmarks like the Spotlight Theater, where we engaged in meaningful conversation with local Indigenous leaders. At the culinary hub at Mother Road Market and the community spaces we visited in the Phoenix District, Downtown Tulsa and the Global District — where Tulsa’s growing immigrant population is shaping a vibrant commercial corridor — we saw how public space, storytelling and trust can serve as powerful tools for healing, connection and investment.
