Want a Climate-Forward City? Start With Your Public Realm

In conjunction with Next City, Reimagining the Civic Commons hosted “Want a Climate-Forward City? Start With Your Public Realm.” The virtual panel was based on the principles presented in Investing with Intention: Environmental Sustainability, a national report demonstrating how public spaces — our parks, libraries, trails, community centers and other shared places — can be powerful climate infrastructure.

The panel featured a slate of experts from the realms of disaster mitigation and recovery, landscape architecture and urban park systems: Dr. Daniel Aldrich, Dean’s Professor of Resilience at Northeastern University; Dr. Diane Jones Allen, Director and Professor of Landscape Architecture at the University of Texas at Arlington; Tony Sorrentino, Chief Executive Officer of Fairmount Park Conservancy. Jazmine da Costa, Environment and Public Space Senior Program Officer at the William Penn Foundation, served as moderator.
